Alive and Kicking

Since I periodically get pinged or PM'd for "is this abandoned?" type of queries, or "are you still alive?" issues . . . I thought I'd post a brief summary of status here.

The limiting factor in my writing -- as for most people -- is my free time. My work environment has done everything possible to remove the concept of free time, such that when coupled to my personal life I have about 1.5 hours per week "to myself" to do as I wish. That makes it hard to do anything at all with Echoes, and that's partly why I started little drabbles like The Contract or the other bunny trails.

Due to that time pressure, actually, I'll be changing jobs in the next month. I am under a signed contract obligation to finish a minimum two year slot in the process of turning an R&D concept into a commercial product, which is up . . . at the end of this month. I've spent the past two months orchestrating my return to R&D and which business unit I'll be returning to, unless I switch to a different company outright.

Until late April, I doubt there will be much external visibility for Echoes. The next chapter is sitting at about 22 kwords, waiting patiently for me to revise and extend. At this point, I'm mostly tempted to just hold off long enough to complete the rest of Part I (six chapters) so it can all launch into beta as a cohesive unit. That would probably delay updates to exactly one year since the last posting, but given it's already been nine months . . . m'eh. I'll figure it out later.

At any rate . . . that's the status. I have a couple of partially drafted scenes for The Contract, and a little bunny trail called M.A.G.I.C., Inc., that's bothering me when I'm stuck in an airport or waiting on a plane for that magic 10,000 ft spot whereupon laptops are allowed.

I hope that you get the move

I hope that you get the move you're looking for and you can begin to enjoy some more free time.

    Drats!

Alive and kicking? My minions have failed me yet again, but for the last time. The caverns will echo with the screams of the inept.

What? Broadcasting? Curses! Know this, Moshpit: your time comes.

    Hem, hem…

Is that like being "fine and dandy"? I seem to recall George Carlin having something to say about that…

…and some of us are looking forward to it, but not necessarily for the same reasons you are.

No, I'm not going to tell you what's in my pocketses. That's for me to know and for you to find out…

    My goodness...you work hard!

My goodness...you work hard! That is a lot of work/stress and you still have a home life.

Per Echoes. I wouldn't mind if you simply finished the first part. And simply post them afterward. It would keep the interest back on the story and take care of the continuity. A very important element in such a huge story.

    Thanks

Thanks for the update. Although I empathize with the pressures of your work life, I have occassionally wondered about the status of Echoes. I appreciate the update and will continue to monitor this site for new chapters. Best of luck with your hoped-for job changes.

    I get it

Who knew how busy a baby would make things - on top of floods and travel and taking a class so my brain doesn't get slow and pudgy...though I am about 9000 words into my next chapter. It's crawling. Moshpit, do what you want and what you can. And if you feel like reading, I'll send you something...

    Pile on . . .

That's it, pile the work on . . . ! Eh, if you're ready for it, send it along. It'll wind up as #2 in the current queue, useful when stuck in airports, hotels, etc.

The landing zone for my new position is in HR's hands. As soon as they (finally) agree to the paperwork, I will be much happier. In the meantime . . . time to hit the road again.
